Answer: 8. a. The main theme of the poem is the purpose of life in spite of despair and struggles. It reflects on the meaning of life and how everyone can play their role in it.
b. The line ‘The powerful play goes on’ highlights that life is continuous and ever-changing. Besides, it emphasizes that each person has the ability to contribute to that play.
c. Reading books is like a journey. It transports us into the age and land of the story just like sailing smoothly on water. This is what the speaker means by the expression.
d. A magic box is believed to contain exciting things. Like a magic box, books contain amazing ages, characters and worlds. This is why, the speaker makes the comparison.
e. The poem creates love, nostalgia, sadness and acceptance of life’s change.
f. The two mothers are the same person, But they are different from each other regarding age and psychophysical changes. The first mother is young and physically independent. But the second one is old and dependent on her child.
g. The poem ‘The Sands of Dee’ creates a sense of tragedy through its events. The descriptions of the cruel and hungry river, the rough weather and Mary’s sad death- all these together make the poem a tragic one.
h. A gipsy man is always on the move. He never stays in one place. Like a gipsy man time also travels from one place to another. Besides, time started its journey from the origin of the earth. So, time is called an old gipsy man.
9. a. Rosamond wanted to buy beautiful roses from the milliner’s shop.
b. Rosamond learnt that she should control her emotion and should be sensible.
c. Antonio was kind enough to help the poor. On the contrary, Shylock was cruel by nature.
d. In the bond between Shylock and Antonio, it was written that if Antonio failed to repay the money in three months’ time, Shylock would cut a pound of flesh from any part of Antonio’s body.
e. A piece of news turned Bassanio’s and Portia’s happiness into sorrow. The news was that Antonio’s ships had sunk at sea and he was unable to repay the loan to Shylock. So, he had to face the penalty.
f. When choosing the casket, Bassanio thought that appearances are often deceptive that bad men often hide their inner ugliness under fine clothes.
g. Shylock was sure of his success in the trial. But he was defeated by the wise lawyer, Portia, Finally, he left the court with his head down.
h. Rosamond became upset because her mother did not buy anything for her.
