a. Do you agree that Lipi is a strong-willed girl? Why?
b. What was the purpose of the meeting called by the Headteacher of Lipi’s school?
c. How did Tara Mia’s father react to the headmaster’s advocacy of cancelling Lipi’s marriage?
d. How was Lipi’s marriage called off?
e. Discuss the impact of early marriage in 2/3 sentences.
Answer: 9. a. Yes, Lipi is a strong-willed girl because going against the decision of her father to marry her off, she managed to cancel the marriage with the help of the teachers and students of her school. Now, she is a student of Carmichael College. It has become possible because of her strong will.
b. The purpose of the meeting called by the Headteacher of Lipi’s school was to cancel the marriage of Lipi at too early an age.
c. In respect to the Headteacher’s advocacy of cancelling Lipi’s marriage, Tara Mia’s father was not happy at all. He said that they were all making mistakes. Also, they were trying to deprive Lipi of the opportunity to have wealth and status in the society.
d. When Lipi informed the teachers and students of her early marriage, the Headteacher called a meeting to discuss it. All the attendees except Tara Mia’s father were against Lipi’s early marriage. So, the marriage was called off.
e. Early marriage has a number of negative impacts. Early marriage causes early pregnancy which causes serious health hazards. Again, due to early marriage, formal education is often stopped and a girl’s dream is shattered.
