Paragraph Writing
Food Adulteration
Adulteration means act of making any commodity impure by admixture of other or baser ingredients. This admixture may corrupt the nature of the original to the extent of destroying its identity. Adulteration of foods and beverages has been performed with the same aim— increasing profits for the manufacturer or merchant. Adulteration not only functions to defraud consumers but it can also pose a health threat. Food adulteration has become a common affair in Bangladesh. According to IPH (Institute of Public Health) more than fifty percent of food samples they have tested are adulterated. Food colouring is a form of adulteration. A toxic artificial dye is used to colour fruits and vegetables such as melons and tomatoes. Urea fertilizer is used while frying muri to whiten it. Brick dust is mixed with chilly powder and a poisonous dye is mixed with turmeric powder. Dalda, a vegetable fat used for cooking is an example of one of the worst cases of adulteration. Fish is not free from adulteration. Formalin is used with imported fish to make it stiff and look fresh. The health experts say that if a person takes these adulterated foods for a long time, he may serious health hazards. Many of these adulterated foods might cause cancer and almost all of them have adverse effect on our digestive system. It is a matter of hope for us that the concerned authority recently has become very active to stop such crime. But the existing laws are not enough to punish the criminals. So, the Government should make new laws and the people should be aware of the bad effect of eating such adulterated foods.
Earthquake
Earthquake is shaking of the Earth’s surface caused by rapid movement of the Earth’s rocky outer layer. Earthquakes occur when energy stored within the Earth, usually in the form of strain in rocks, suddenly releases. This energy is transmitted to the surface of the Earth by earthquake waves. Scientists who study earthquakes are called seismologists. Most earthquakes are caused by the sudden slip along geologic faults. The faults slip because of movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates. This concept is called the elastic rebound theory. The rocky tectonic plates move very slowly, floating on top of a weaker rocky layer. As the plates collide with each other or slide past each other, pressure builds up within the rocky crust. Earthquakes occur when pressure within the crust increases slowly over hundreds of years and finally exceeds the strength of the rocks. Earthquakes also occur when human activities, such as the filling of reservoirs, increase stress in the Earth’s crust. In the last 500 years, several million people have been killed by earthquakes around the world, including over 240,000 in the 1976 Tang-Shan, China, earthquake. Worldwide, earthquakes have also caused severe property and structural damage. Adequate precautions, such as education, emergency planning and constructing stronger, more flexible, safely designed structures, can limit the loss of life and decrease the damage caused by earthquakes. Bangladesh is also is in the risk of a major earthquake because it lies in the active earthquake zone. The recurrent occurrence of the earthquake in Bangladesh has made us concerned. All the buildings should follow earthquake building code as mandatory to reduce the loss.
